Four teenagers were arrested shortly after the assault, which took place in Pitsea on Monday afternoon.
Paramedics arrived to find the child with a knife wound to his back and was airlifted to the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel.
His injury is described as serious but not life-threatening.
A girl and three boys, all aged 14, were arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.
They remain in custody for questioning, Essex police said in a statement.
