AWUJALE REJECTS THE TITLE “ROYAL HIGHNESS”

The Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebu land, Oba Sikiru Adetona, has warned people to stop addressing him with appellations such as “Royal Majesty”, “Imperial majesty,” “Royal Highness”, and so on.

Kabiyesi Awujale said this today at his palace in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, while playing host to his August visitor, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II. Kabiyesi Awujale cut in to stop the Master of Ceremony: “I don’t like people calling me royal majesty, royal highness, imperial majesty, and all these oyinbo (English) names. They are not in my legal instrument of office. What is in my legal instrument is Oba Alayeluwa, and that was how I want to be addressed.”

Everybody in the hall was surprised, and the compere had to quickly correct himself.

Oba Awujale warned the Ooni of Ife to beware of praise singers who are only out for their selfish ends. “Apart from political parties, there are also various socio-cultural groups claiming to be fighting for the interest of Yoruba. When you look at them closely, you will discover that they are only fighting for their personal interests. Be wary of them”, Awujale added.
