In front of hundreds of cheering spectators made up of Britons, Africans and Nigerians alike, the African Boxing Union Welter weight champion Larry “The Natural” EKUNDAYO successfully defended his title in London last Friday against Ghanaian Joseph LAMPTEY.
The match which took place at the Troxy Arena East London saw the champion beat his opponent “silly” just as he had earlier promised following the incident at the pre-match weigh in during which the Ghanaian had grabbed the Nigerian flag off Larry, scrunched it up before throwing it on the floor. The action had prompted widespread indignation from many Nigerians who will be placated by the champions victory.
Larry had been the firm favourite to win the fight and he didn’t disappoint his legion of fans who cheered and chanted his name throughout the 12-round fight.
He was a declared winner by the judges unanimous decision.
Among the crowd of spectators were celebs from the Naija community including Chief Bimbo Folayan-Roberts, Dr Mike Abiola, Sam Onigbanjo, Deejay Abbas, Abba Kristilolu, Charles Khiran, Otunba Femi Adenuga, Prince Eze Ihenacho and of course yours truly.
The Lagos State University graduate said this fight is his next step in his journey towards pushing for title honour. He added that his ultimate goal is to become British. Commowealth and World Champion.
Larry has a impressive record of winning all of his 12 fights.
