Transport bosses are investigating footage which appears to show a runaway London bus careering across a main road with no-one at the controls.
Video captured by a taxi’s dashboard-mounted camera shows the moment the bus runs across three lanes towards the central reservation before a man, believed to be the driver, brings it to a halt.
In the clip, the man is seen rushing to the driver’s cab before bringing the vehicle to a stop and reversing it back up a side street.
The footage was captured by a black cab driver in the early hours of Sunday morning on a street in Marylebone.
WARNING: Video contains strong language
The black cab driver, tweeting under the account name @Turntablist91, said he spotted the bus pulling out in front of him without the driver and was able to slow down in time.
A passenger in the taxi can be heard claiming the driver is asleep: “What is he doing? Is he sleeping? F****** hell.”
The driver responds by saying: “He wasn’t in the driving seat.”
The footage shows at least one passenger on board the bus. The driver who captured the footage said he did not believe there were any injuries.
He shared the video online with the caption: “Runaway @TfLTPH bus 20/08/17 4.30am, Grt Central St on to Marylebone Rd, he got behind the wheel just in time, thank god no casualties.”
The Met’s Cycle Safety Team responded to the video saying it was “unbelievable”.
They wrote: “@TfL I suggest would be holding a fully investigation into this matter @metpoliceuk #RTPC.”
A Transport for London spokesperson said: “We have asked the bus operator, Go Ahead, to urgently investigate this footage and to report back to us.”
