SERVING MET OFFICE JAILED FOR RAPE

A serving police officer has been jailed following his conviction for rape.

Michael Graham, 49 (14.04.67) a serving police officer attached to Hounslow Borough, has today, Friday, 17 June, been jailed for 16 years for rape and sexual assault.

Graham was convicted at the Old Bailey on Thursday, 16 June of seven counts of rape and one sexual assault.

The offences took place between 24 December 2013 and 2 September 2014, at an address in Uxbridge and whilst the officer was off-duty.

The court heard that audio of some of the offences were captured on a sleep app which had been installed on the victim’s iPhone

Police were called to an address in Uxbridge on 2 September 2014, where Graham was originally arrested for common assault and threats to kill. Officers located the victim, a woman in her 30s, in a nearby park in a distressed state. She made a number of allegations of rape and as a result of those Graham was further arrested, and subsequently suspended from duty.

An investigation was launched by detectives from the Met’s Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command.

Graham was interviewed on 3 September 2014, and again on 6 and 7 October 2015. He declined to answer any questions put to him, but provided a pre-prepared statement in which he denied all the allegations put to him.

Detective Constable Stephen Kelly, of the Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command, said: “I would like to praise the victim for her bravery in coming forward and reporting her ordeal at the hands of Graham to the police. Without her evidence, the offences Graham committed could not have been investigated and he would not be facing a lengthy prison sentence.”

Chief Superintendent Matt Gardner, of the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards, said:“Michael Graham targeted a vulnerable woman, and attempted to use his position as a police officer to scare her into keeping quiet about his criminal behaviour. The public should be reassured that no police officer can hide behind their occupation as a way to break the law and get away with it.

“Police officers join the Met to protect and serve Londoners, and it is clear from the jury’s verdict that his behaviour fell well short of the high standards that we expect of all our staff. This criminal abused the trust that being a part of the Metropolitan Police is all about. His behaviour is at odds to the thousands of brave men and women of the Met who work hard to keep London safe, support the vulnerable and arrest criminals everyday. Now he has been convicted we will complete an immediate misconduct review.”
