(first posted on the occasion of Mohammadu Buhari winning the Nigerian Presidential Elections – April2015)
Today marks the dawn of a bright new beginning, of renewed hope and renewed expectations for our dear country Nigeria.
For a long time, many of us had been driven to virtually give up and many have even abandoned the sinking ship that seemed to be carelessly steered towards great reefs and rocks by our very own leaders, unto whose hands we had entrusted our country and our lives.
Arrogance,
Greed,
Unbridled corruption
Encouraged corruption
Insecurity
Missing children
Neglected infrastructure
Meagre resources
Youth unemployment
Mass indiscipline
Mass poverty
Minority enrichment
and so on…..
Had been the order of the day in our country and for so long too.
But fate seems to have thrown us a lifeboat.
Many have prayed, fasted and sought the face of God and asked for His mercy on our dear fatherland. And we trust that He has answered us and given us a new leadership that we must trust to deliver the much needed and expected goods.
But these will not come swiftly
It will not come in days or weeks. But it will come – gradually and progressively.
But we all must work with this new leadership. Rome was not built in a day. And it cannot be business as usual.
WE must forsake out old habits that our past leaders have instilled in us and be convinced that the only way forward is the new way.
All our bad habits as a nation must be dropped. We must repent of our old innately and seemingly genetic criminal ways.
WE must imbibe the culture of openness and honesty.
WE must embrace the very standards and convictions that GMB is known for – even by his opposers.
I am not preaching that anyone be converted to GMB’s religious beliefs – FAR FROM IT
But GOD knew what He saw in him before He gave Him to us. After all, our past leader was a Christian. You know his story.
But GMB is first and foremost a man with high standards, uttermost integrity and strict discipline.
I was a University student when he was first in power – and YES he was strict. His regime as a military regime was strict.
But life was safe
There was great discipline that people actually learnt to discipline themselves. Corruption and self over indulgence was eschewed.
418, yahoo-yahoo and all the criminal past times were alien ideas and no one would have dreamt of indulging
And that was in the mid 80s where technology wasn’t as advanced as we have now, and our people were not as exposed and as travelled as we are now.
Im sure that Baba – as a civilian leader – with excellent people around him, great advisers and advisors, selfless individuals and most of all, AN INTELLIGENT WIFE – will deliver.
Hopefully before long, we will start to see the Nigeria that many who have lost hope can dare to dream big again – and many stuck in Diaspora can begin to think that coming back home is possible.
BUT ABOVE ALL, LET US NOT STOP PRAYING TO GOD TO DIRECT HIS HAND AND HEART.
I hear the sound of coming rain upon our country. The rain of God’s abundance.
To the new Nigeria – We hail Thee.
WE WELCOME YOU SAI BUHARI.
